e3d60f761c build: Fix generation of virtproxyd socket files
The various virtproxyd socket files are generated with invalid syntax,
e.g. from virtproxyd.socket

[Unit]
Description=Libvirt proxy local socket
Before=virtproxyd.service
libvirtd.socket libvirtd-ro.socket libvirtd-admin.socket libvirtd-tcp.socket libvirtd-tls.socket

Note the missing 'Conflicts=' in the last line. Fix it by prepending
'Conflicts=' to libvirtd_socket_conflicts when adding virtproxyd
to virt_daemon_units.

32c5e43204 Revert "remote: Add libvirtd dependency to virt-guest-shutdown.target"
Further testing revealed commit f035f53baa regresses Debian bug 955216

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=955216

Restarting libvirt-guests on libvirtd restart is worse than the original
dependency issue, so revert the commit until a better solution is found.

This reverts commit f035f53baa.

829142699e remote: make ssh-helper massively faster
It was reported that the performance of tunnelled migration and
volume upload/download regressed in 6.9.0, when the virt-ssh-helper
is used for remote SSH tunnelling instead of netcat.

When seeing data available to read from stdin, or the socket,
the current code will allocate at most 1k of extra space in
the buffer it has.

After writing data to the socket, or stdout, if more than 1k
of extra space is in the buffer, it will reallocate to free
up that space.

This results in a huge number of mallocs when doing I/O, as
well as a huge number of syscalls since at most 1k of data
will be read/written at a time.

Also if writing blocks for some reason, it will continue to
read data with no memory bound which is bad.

This changes the code to use a 1 MB fixed size buffer in each
direction. If that buffer becomes full, it will update the
watches to stop reading more data. It will never reallocate
the buffer at runtime.

This increases the performance by orders of magnitude.

a42b46dd7d virnetdaemon: Wait for "daemon-stop" thread to finish before quitting
When the host is shutting down then we get PrepareForShutdown
signal on DBus to which we react by creating a thread which
runs virStateStop() and thus qemuStateStop(). But if scheduling
the thread is delayed just a but it may happen that we receive
SIGTERM (sent by systemd) to which we respond by quitting our
event loop and cleaning up everything (including drivers). And
only after that the thread gets to run only to find qemu_driver
being NULL.

What we can do is to delay exiting event loop and join the thread
that's executing virStateStop(). If the join doesn't happen in
given timeout (currently 30 seconds) then libvirtd shuts down
forcefully anyways (see virNetDaemonRun()).

b866adf8d9 libvirt: support memory failure event
Introduce memory failure event. Libvirt should monitor domain's
event, then posts it to uplayer. According to the hardware memory
corrupted message, a cloud scheduler could migrate domain to another
health physical server.

Several changes in this patch:
public API:
    include/*
    src/conf/*
    src/remote/*
    src/remote_protocol-structs

client:
    examples/c/misc/event-test.c
    tools/virsh-domain.c

With this patch, each driver could implement its own method to run
this new event.

f8ec7c842d rpc: use new virt-ssh-helper binary for remote tunnelling
This wires up support for using the new virt-ssh-helper binary with the ssh,
libssh and libssh2 protocols.

The new binary will be used preferentially if it is available in $PATH,
otherwise we fall back to traditional netcat.

The "proxy" URI parameter can be used to force use of netcat e.g.

  qemu+ssh://host/system?proxy=netcat

or the disable fallback e.g.

  qemu+ssh://host/system?proxy=native

With use of virt-ssh-helper, we can now support remote session URIs

  qemu+ssh://host/session

and this will only use virt-ssh-helper, with no fallback. This also lets
the libvirtd process be auto-started, and connect directly to the
modular daemons, avoiding use of virtproxyd back-compat tunnelling.

dfad1b551d remote: introduce virt-ssh-helper binary
When accessing libvirtd over a SSH tunnel, the remote driver needs a way
to proxy the SSH input/output stream to a suitable libvirt daemon. This
is currently done by spawning netcat, pointing it to the libvirtd socket
path. This is problematic for a number of reasons:

 - The socket path varies according to the --prefix chosen at build
time. The remote client is seeing the local prefix, but what we
   need is the remote prefix

 - The socket path varies according to remote env variables, such as
the XDG_RUNTIME_DIR location. Again we see the local XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
value, but what we need is the remote value (if any)

 - The remote driver doesn't know whether it must connect to the legacy
libvirtd or the modular daemons, so must always assume legacy
libvirtd for back-compat. This means we'll always end up using the
virtproxyd daemon adding an extra hop in the RPC layer.

 - We can not able to autospawn the libvirtd daemon for session mode
   access

To address these problems this patch introduces the 'virtd-ssh-helper'
program which takes the URI for the remote driver as a CLI parameter.
It then figures out which daemon to connect to and its socket path,
using the same code that the remote driver client would on the remote
host's build of libvirt.

Currently we have issues like [1] on libvirtd shutdown as we cleanup while RPC
and other threads are still running. Let's finish all threads other then main
before cleanup.

The approach to finish threads is suggested in [2]. In order to finish RPC
threads serving API calls we let the event loop run but stop accepting new API
calls and block processing any pending API calls. We also inform all drivers of
shutdown so they can prepare for shutdown too. Then we wait for all RPC threads
and driver's background thread to finish. If finishing takes more then 15s we
just exit as we can't safely cleanup in time.

cannot know where the socket leads (whether the same daemon or not) let's decide
that based on whether the socket path is non-standard, or rather explicitly
specified in the URI. Checking non-standard path would require to ask the
daemon for configuration and the only misuse that it would prevent would be a
pretty weird one. And that's not worth it. The assumption is that whenever
someone uses explicit UNIX socket paths in the URI for migration they better
know what they are doing.

b196f8fcdd remote: use SocketMode=0600 when polkit is not compiled
The systemd .socket unit files we ship for libvirt daemons use
SocketMode=0666 on the assumption that libvirt is built with
polkit which provides access control.

Some people, however, may have explicitly turned off polkit at
build time and not realize that leaves them insecure unless
they also change the SocketMode. This addresses that problem
by making the SocketMode default to 0600 when polkit is
disabled at compile time.

Note we cannot automatically fix the case where the user
compiles polkit, but then overrides the libvirtd.conf defaults
to disable polkit. This is what lead to CVE-2020-15708 in
Ubuntu 20.10. We can at least improve the inline comments
in the config file to give a clearer warning though, which
may have helped avoid the mistaken config.

The current code to check XDR support was obsolete and way to

On linux we can use pkg-config to check for libtirpc and have

On MinGW there is portablexdr library which installs header files

On FreeBSD and macOS XDR functions are part of libc so there is
no library needed, we just need to call AM_CONDITIONAL to silence
configure which otherwise complains about missing WITH_XDR.

0756415f14 systemd: start libvirtd after firewalld/iptables services
When a system has enabled the iptables/ip6tables services rather than
firewalld, there is no explicit ordering of the start of those
services vs. libvirtd. This creates a problem when libvirtd.service is
started before ip[6]tables, as the latter, when it finally is started,
will remove all of the iptables rules that had previously been added
by libvirt, including the custom chains where libvirt's rules are
kept. This results in an error message similar to the following when a
user subsequently tries to start a new libvirt network:

"Error while activating network: Call to virNetworkCreate failed:
internal error: Failed to apply firewall rules
 /usr/sbin/ip6tables -w --table filter --insert LIBVIRT_FWO \
   --in-interface virbr2 --jump REJECT:
ip6tables: No chain/target/match by that name."

(Prior to logging this error, it also would have caused failure to
forward (or block) traffic in some cases, e.g. for guests on a NATed
network, since libvirt's rules to forward/block had all been deleted
and libvirt didn't know about it, so it couldn't fix the problem)

When this happens, the problem can be remedied by simply restarting
libvirtd.service (which has the side-effect of reloading all
libvirt-generated firewall rules)

Instead, we can just explicitly stating in the libvirtd.service file
that libvirtd.service should start after ip6tables.service and
ip6tables.service, eliminating the race condition that leads to the
error.

There is also nothing (that I can see) in the systemd .service files
to guarantee that firewalld.service will be started (if enabled) prior
to libvirtd.service. The same error scenario given above would occur
if libvirtd.service started before firewalld.service. Even before
that, though libvirtd would have detected that firewalld.service was
disabled, and then turn off all firewalld support. So, for example,
firewalld's libvirt zone wouldn't be used, and most likely traffic
from guests would therefore be blocked (all with no external
indication of the source of the problem other than a debug-level log
when libvirtd was started saying that firewalld wasn't in use); also
libvirtd wouldn't notice when firewalld reloaded its rules (which also
simultaneously deletes all of libvirt's rules).

I'm not aware of any reports that have been traced back to
libvirtd.service starting before firewalld.service, but have seen that
error reported multiple times, and also don't see an existing
dependency that would guarantee firewalld.service starts before
libvirtd.service, so it's possible it's been happening and we just
haven't gotten to the bottom of it.

This patch adds an After= line to the libvirtd.service file for each
of iptables.service, ip6tables.service, and firewalld.servicee, which
should guarantee that libvirtd.service isn't started until systemd has
started whichever of the others is enabled.

This race was diagnosed, and patch proposed, by Jason Montleon in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1723698 . At the time (April 2019) danpb
agreed with him that this change to libvirtd.service was a reasonable
thing to do, but I guess everyone thought someone else was going to
post a patch, so in the end nobody did.

69eee587da rpc: avoid name lookup when dispatching node device APIs
The node device APIs are a little unusual because we don't use a
"remote_nonnull_node_device" object on the wire, instead we just
have a "remote_string" for the device name. This meant dispatcher
code generation needed special cases. In doing so we mistakenly
used the virNodeDeviceLookupByName() API which gets dispatched
into the driver, instead of get_nonnull_node_device() which
directly populates a virNodeDevicePtr object.

This wasn't a problem with monolithic libvirtd, as the
virNodeDeviceLookupByName() API call was trivially satisfied
by the registered driver, albeit with an extra (undesirable)
authentication check. With the split daemons, the call to
virNodeDeviceLookupByName() fails in virtqemud, because the
node device driver obviously doesn't exist in that daemon.

program, however, it fails to create eBPF map and program with 64k limit.
By testing I figured out that the minimal limit is 80k to start a single
VM with functional eBPF and if I add 12k I can start another one.

This leads into following calculation:

80k as memlock limit worked to start a VM with eBPF which means there
is 68k of lock memory that I was not able to figure out what was using
it. So to get a number for 4096 VMs:

        68 + 12 * 4096 = 49220

If we round it up we will get 64M of memory lock limit to support 4096
VMs with default map size which can hold 64 entries for devices.

This should be good enough as a sane default and users can change it if
the need to.

2621d48f00 gnulib: delete all gnulib integration
This deletes all trace of gnulib from libvirt. We still
have the keycodemapdb submodule to deal with. The simple
solution taken was to update it when running autogen.sh.

Previously gnulib could auto-trigger refresh when running
'make' too. We could figure out a solution for this, but
with the pending meson rewrite it isn't worth worrying
about, given how infrequently keycodemapdb changes.

207709a031 libvirt: pass a directory path into drivers for embedded usage
The intent here is to allow the virt drivers to be run directly embedded
in an arbitrary process without interfering with libvirtd. To achieve
this they need to store all their configuration & state in a separate
directory tree from the main system or session libvirtd instances.

This can be useful for doing testing of the virt drivers in "make check"
without interfering with the user's own libvirtd instances.

It can also be used for applications using KVM/QEMU as a piece of
infrastructure to build an service, rather than for general purpose
OS hosting. A long standing example is libguestfs, which would prefer
if its temporary VMs did show up in the main libvirtd VM list, because
this confuses apps such as OpenStack Nova. A more recent example would
be Kata which is using KVM as a technology to build containers.
