Pull out the portion of virDomainSnapshotRefinePrep() that deals
with definition sanity into a separate helper routine that can
be reused with bulk redefine, leaving behind only the code
specific to loop checking and in-place updates that are only
needed in single-definition handling.

Right now, the only callers of qemuDomainSnapshotDiscardAllMetadata()
are right before freeing the virDomainSnapshotObjList, so it did not
matter if the list's metaroot (which points to all the defined root
snapshots) is left inconsistent. But an upcoming patch will want to
clear all snapshots if a bulk redefine fails partway through, in
which case things must be reset. Make this work by teaching the
existing virDomainSnapshotUpdateRelations() to be safe regardless of
the incoming state of the metaroot (since we don't want to leak that
internal detail into qemu code), then fixing the qemu code to use
it after deleting all snapshots. Additionally, the qemu code must
reset vm->current_snapshot if the current snapshot was removed,
regardless of whether the overall removal succeeded or failed later.

virDomainSnapshotDefFormat currently takes two sets of knobs:
an 'unsigned int flags' argument that can currently just be
VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_SECURE, and an 'int internal' argument used as
a bool to determine whether to output an additional element. It
then reuses the 'flags' knob to call into virDomainDefFormatInternal(),
which takes a different set of flags. In fact, prior to commit 0ecd6851
(1.2.12), the 'flags' argument actually took the public
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE, which was even more confusing. Let's borrow
from the style of that earlier commit, by introducing a function
for translating from the public flags (VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_XML_SECURE
was just recently introduced) into a new enum specific to snapshot
formatting, and adjust all callers to use snapshot-specific enum
values when formatting, and where the formatter now uses a new
variable 'domainflags' to make it obvious when we are translating
from snapshot flags back to domain flags. We don't even have to
use the conversion function for drivers that don't accept the
public VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_XML_SECURE flag.

The existing virDomainSnapshotState is a superset of virDomainState,
adding one more state (disk-snapshot) on top of valid domain states.
But as written, the enum cannot be used for gcc validation that all
enum values are covered in a strongly-typed switch condition, because
the enum does not explicitly include the values it is adding to.
Copy the style used in qemu_blockjob.h of creating new enum names
for every inherited value, and update most clients to use the new
enum names anywhere snapshot state is referenced. The exception is
two switch statements in qemu code, which instead gain a fixme
comment about odd type usage (which will be cleaned up in the next
patch). The rest of the patch is fairly mechanical (I actually did
it by temporarily s/state/xstate/ in snapshot_conf.h to let the
compiler find which spots in the code used the field, did the
obvious search and replace in those functions, then undid the rename).

Due to historical back-compat, bare 'virsh snapshot-create-as'
favors internal snapshots (but can't be used on domains with raw
storage), while 'virsh snapshot-create-as --disk-only' favors
external snapshots. What's more, snapshots created with
--disk-only while the domain was running are marked as snapshot
state 'disk-snapshot', while snapshots created while the domain
was offline are marked as snapshot state 'shutdown' (a
'disk-snapshot' image might not be quiescent, while a 'shutdown'
snapshot always is).
But this leads to some interesting problems: if we create a
--disk-only snapshot of an offline guest, and then immediately try
to 'virsh snapshot-create --redefine' using the resulting XML to
overwrite the existing snapashot in place, things silently succeed,
but 'virsh snapshot-create --redefine --disk-only' fails with an
error message that the snapshot state is not 'disk-only'. Worse,
if we delete the snapshot metadata first and then try to recreate
things, omitting --disk-only fails because the verification code
wants to force the default of an internal snapshot (which doesn't
work with raw disks), and using --disk-only still fails because the
snapshot XML is not 'disk-only' - making it impossible to recreate
the snapshot metadata (or to transfer it from one libvirtd host to
another). Ideally, the presence or absence of the --disk-only
flag, and the presence or absence of an existing snapshot being
overwritten, shouldn't matter; if the XML is valid for one
situation, it should always be valid to redefine the metadata for
that snapshot.
Fix things by uniformly using virDomainSnapshotDefIsExternal()
(caching the results up front, and eliminating other 'if' clauses
now rendered redundant) when deciding whether the XML being
requested for redefinition should permit external or force internal
state capture (we got it right in only one out of three places in
the function).
See also https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1680304; this fixes the
domain-agnostic problems mentioned there, but another patch is
needed to fix further oddities with the qemu driver. I did not
check for sure when the problems were introduced (git blame puts
some affected hunks as far back as 1.0.0), but it was definitely
been broken even before when commit 670e86bf (1.1.4) factored
redefine prep out of qemu code into the common snapshot_conf code.

Upcoming patches plan to introduce virDomainCheckpointPtr as a new
object for use in incremental backups, along with documentation on
how incremental backups differ from snapshots. But first, we need
to rename any existing mention of a 'system checkpoint' to instead
be a 'full system snapshot', so that we aren't overloading
the term checkpoint.

Most of the code base is fairly consistent about using the name
'uuidstr' when dealing with a formatted human-readable form, and
'uuid' when dealing with the smaller raw bytes form. Fix
snapshot_conf to comply, as well as reducing the scope of a human
string to only the error message that needs it.

Missing semicolon at the end of macros can confuse some analyzers
(like cppcheck <filename>), and we have a mix of semicolon and
non-semicolon usage through the code. Let's standardize on using
a semicolon for VIR_ENUM_IMPL calls.
Move the verify() statement to the end of the macro and drop
the semicolon, so the compiler will require callers to add a
semicolon.
While we are touching these call sites, standardize on putting
the closing parenth on its own line, as discussed here:

In many files there are header comments that contain an Author:
statement, supposedly reflecting who originally wrote the code.
In a large collaborative project like libvirt, any non-trivial
file will have been modified by a large number of different
contributors. IOW, the Author: comments are quickly out of date,
omitting people who have made significant contribitions.
In some places Author: lines have been added despite the person
merely being responsible for creating the file by moving existing
code out of another file. IOW, the Author: lines give an incorrect
record of authorship.
With this all in mind, the comments are useless as a means to identify
who to talk to about code in a particular file. Contributors will always
be better off using 'git log' and 'git blame' if they need to find the
author of a particular bit of code.
This commit thus deletes all Author: comments from the source and adds
a rule to prevent them reappearing.
The Copyright headers are similarly misleading and inaccurate, however,
we cannot delete these as they have legal meaning, despite being largely
inaccurate. In addition only the copyright holder is permitted to change
their respective copyright statement.

We already have a way stricter check in the code which is doing the
snapshot so duplicating it in the parser does not make much sense. Also
gets rid of an ugly ternary operator.

Commit id '43f2ccdc' called virDomainDiskSourceDefFormatInternal
rather than formatting the the disk source inline. However, it
did not handle the case where the helper failed. Over time the
helper has been renamed to virDomainDiskSourceFormat. Similar to
other consumers, if virDomainDiskSourceFormat fails, then the
formatting could be off, so it's better to fail than to continue
on with some possibly bad data. Alter the function and the caller
to check status and jump to error in that case.

VM drivers may need to store additional private data to the status XML
so that it can be restored after libvirtd restart. Since not everything
is needed add a callback infrastructure, where VM drivers can add only
stuff they need.
Note that the private data is formatted as a <privateData> sub-element
of the <disk> or <backingStore> <source> sub-element. This is done since
storing it out of band (in the VM private data) would require a complex
matching process to allow to put the data into correct place.
Add an optional virTristateBool haveTLS to virStorageSource to
manage whether a storage source will be using TLS.

Additionally add a tlsFromConfig boolean to control whether the TLS
setting was due to domain configuration or qemu.conf global setting
in order to decide whether to Format the haveTLS setting for either
a live or saved domain configuration file.
Update the qemuxml2xmltest in order to add a test to show the proper
parsing.
Also update the docs to describe the tls attribute.

While checking for ABI stability, drivers might pose additional
checks that are not valid for general case. For instance, qemu
driver might check some memory backing attributes because of how
qemu works. But those attributes may work well in other drivers.

Until now we weren't able to add checks that would reject configuration
once accepted by the parser. This patch adds a new callback and
infrastructure to add such checks. In this patch all the places where
rejecting a now-invalid configuration wouldn't be a good idea are marked
with a new parser flag.
Our existing virHashForEach method iterates through all items disregarding the
fact, that some of the iterators might have actually failed. Errors are usually
dispatched through an error element in opaque data which then causes the
original caller of virHashForEach to return -1. In that case, virHashForEach
could return as soon as one of the iterators fail. This patch changes the
iterator return type and adjusts all of its instances accordingly, so the
actual refactor of virHashForEach method can be dealt with later.

The snapshot name generator truncates the original file name after a '.'
and replaces the suffix with the snapshot name. If two disks source
images differ only in the suffix portion, the generated name will be
duplicate.
Since this is a corner case just error out stating that a duplicate name
was generated. The user can work around this situation by providing
the file names explicitly.

so should be providing a non-NULL virCapsPtr instance. On the
qemu driver we change qemuDomainSnapshotWriteMetadata to also

This needs to specified in way too many places for a simple validation
check. The ostype/arch/virttype validation checks later in
DomainDefParseXML should catch most of the cases that this was covering.
When parsing XML, we validate the passed ostype + arch combo against
the detected hypervisor capabilities. This has led to the following
problem:
- Define x86 qemu guest
- qemu is inadvertently removed from the host
- libvirtd is restarted. fails to parse VM config since arch is removed
- 'virsh list --all' is now empty, user is wondering where their VMs went
Add a new internal flag VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_PARSE_SKIP_OSTYPE_CHECKS. Use
it when loading VM and snapshot configs from disk.

A helper that never returns an error and treats bits out of bitmap range
as false.
Use it everywhere we use ignore_value on virBitmapGetBit, or loop over
the bitmap size.
The virDomainDefParse* and virDomainDefFormat* methods both
accept the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_* flags defined in the public API,
along with a set of other VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INTERNAL_* flags
defined in domain_conf.c.
This is seriously confusing & error prone for a number of
reasons:
- VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_MIGRATABLE and
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_UPDATE_CPU are only relevant for the
formatting operation
- Some of the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INTERNAL_* flags only apply
to parse or to format, but not both.
This patch cleanly separates out the flags. There are two
distint VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_PARSE_* and VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_*
flags that are used by the corresponding methods. The
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_* flags received via public API calls must
be converted to the VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_* flags where
needed.
The various calls to virDomainDefParse which hardcoded the
use of the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INACTIVE flag change to use the
VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_PARSE_INACTIVE flag.
Some storage systems have internal support for snapshots. Libvirt should
be able to select a correct snapshot when starting a VM.
This patch adds a XML element to select a storage source snapshot for
the RBD protocol which supports this feature.
I noticed this while working on qemuDomainGetBlockInfo. Assigning
a bool value to an int variable compiles fine, but raises red flags
on the maintenance front as it becomes too easy to assign -1 or 2
or any other non-bool value to the same variable.

If a (floppy) drive isn't selected for snapshot explicitly and is empty
don't try to snapshot it. For external snapshots this would fail as we
can't generate a name for the snapshot from an empty drive.

RNG schema as well as the qemu driver requires absolute paths for memory
and disk snapshot image files but the XML parser was not enforcing it.
Add checks to avoid problems in qemu where the configuration it creates
is invalid.

As part of the work on backing chains, I'm finding that it would
be easier to directly manipulate chains of pointers (adding a
snapshot merely adjusts pointers to form the correct list) rather
than copy data from one struct to another. This patch converts
snapshot source to be a pointer.
In this patch, the pointer is ALWAYS allocated (any code that
increases ndisks now also allocates a source pointer for each
new disk), and all other changes are just mechanical fallout of
the new type; there should be no functional change. It is
possible that we may want to leave the pointer NULL for internal
snapshots in a later patch, but as that requires a closer audit
of the source to ensure we don't fault on a null dereference, I
didn't do it here.

Domain snapshots should only permit an external snapshot into
a storage format that permits a backing chain, since the new
snapshot file necessarily must be backed by the existing file.
The C code for the qemu driver is a little bit stricter in
currently enforcing only qcow2 or qed, but at the XML parser
level, including virt-xml-validate, it is fairly easy to
enforce that a user can't request a 'raw' external snapshot.

Right now, virStorageFileMetadata tracks bool backingStoreIsFile
for whether the backing string specified in metadata can be
resolved as a file (covering both block and regular file
resources) or is treated as a network protocol. But when
merging this struct with virStorageSource, it will be easier
to just actually track which type of resource it is, as well
as have a reserved value for the case where the resource type
is unknown (or had an error during probing).

All leading spaces in domain snapshot xml format functions have been
replaced with appropriate calls to virBufferAdjustIndent(). This will
make it easier to call other similarly fixed format functions
(e.g. domain device format functions).
Many of the domain xml format functions (including all of the device
format functions) had hard-coded spaces, which made for incorrect
indentation when those functions were called in a different context
(for example, commit 2122cf39 added <interface> XML into the document
provided to a network hook script, and in this case it should have
been indented by 2 spaces, but was instead indented by 6 spaces).
To make it possible to insert a properly indented device anywhere into
an XML document, this patch removes hardcoded spaces from the
formatting functions, and calls virBufferAdjustIndent() at appropriate
places instead. (a regex search of domain_conf.c was done to assure
that all occurrences of hardcoded spaces were removed).
virDomainDiskSourceDefFormatInternal() is also called from
snapshot_conf.c, so two virBufferAdjustIndent() calls were temporarily
added around that call - those functions will have hardcoded spaces
removed in a separate patch.
This could cause some conflicts when backporting future changes to the
formatting functions to older branches, but fortunately the changes
are almost all trivial, so conflict resolution will be obvious.
All the data for getting the actual type is present in the snapshot
config. There is no need to have this function private to the qemu
driver and it will be re-used later in other parts of libvirt
Add support for specifying various types when doing snapshots. This will
later allow to do snapshots on network backed volumes. Disks of type
'volume' are not supported by snapshots (yet).
Also amend the test suite to check parsing of the various new disk
types that can now be specified.
Currently, during XML parsing, when a call to a FromString() function to
get an enum value fails, the error which is reported is either
VIR_ERR_CONFIG_UNSUPPORTED, VIR_ERR_INTERNAL_ERROR or VIR_ERR_XML_ERROR.
This commit makes such conversion failures consistently return
VIR_ERR_CONFIG_UNSUPPORTED.
When changing the parsing and formatting functions in commit
43f2ccdc73 I forgot to update the qemu
disk alignment function for snapshots that automatically adds snapshot
configs for disks that were not mentioned in the XML. The function
allocated a new disk snapshot definition but did not correctly
initialize the snapshot disk source type variable. This resulted into
the disks considered as block devices and invalid XML was generated.

Consider the following valid snapshot XML as the <driver> element is
allowed to be empty in the domainsnapshot.rng schema:

produces the following error:

error: internal error: unknown disk snapshot driver '(null)'
The driver type is parsed as NULL from the XML as the attribute is not
present and then directly used to produce the error message.
With this patch the attempt to parse the driver type is skipped if not
present to avoid changing the schema to forbid the empty driver element.
Disk source elements for snapshots were using separate code from our
config parser. As snapshots can be stored on more than just regular
files, we will need the universal parser to allow us to expose a variety
of snapshot disk targets. This patch reuses the config parsers and
formatters to do the job.
This initial support only changes the code without any visible XML
change.
'const fooPtr' is the same as 'foo * const' (the pointer won't
change, but it's contents can). But in general, if an interface
is trying to be const-correct, it should be using 'const foo *'
(the pointer is to data that can't be changed).

The virDomainSnapshotDefParse method assigned to def->ndisks
before allocating def->disks. Thus if an OOM occurred, the
cleanup code would access out of bounds.

Just to reduce the indentation levels. Remove the unneeded
NULL check for disk->file, as virBufferEscapeString doesn't
print anything with NULL arguments.
The source code base needs to be adapted as well. Some files
include virutil.h just for the string related functions (here,
the include is substituted to match the new file), some include
virutil.h without any need (here, the include is removed), and
some require both.
This patch is the result of running:

and a few manual tweaks.
The virCaps structure gathered a ton of irrelevant data over time that.
The original reason is that it was propagated to the XML parser
functions.
This patch aims to create a new data structure virDomainXMLConf that
will contain immutable data that are used by the XML parser. This will
allow two things we need:
1) Get rid of the stuff from virCaps
2) Allow us to add callbacks to check and add driver specific stuff
after domain XML is parsed.
This first attempt removes pointers to private data allocation functions
to this new structure and update all callers and function that require
them.
When a disk-only snapshot is requested the domain is treated as if it
was offline. This forbids to mix memory checkpoints with the DISK_ONLY
flag.
This patch improves the error message and mentions the restriction in
the virsh man page.
Relatively straight-forward. And since qemu was already using
VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_FILTERS_ALL, with 6 different APIs all calling
into this common code, I've instantly added all 5 flags to 6 APIs.

For disk snapshots, the user could request an external snapshot
but not supply a filename; later on, we would check this condition
and generate a suitable name if possible, or gracefully error out
when not possible (such as when the original file was a block
device). But unless we come up with a suitable way to generate
external memory file names, we have no later code point that was
checking for NULL, so we should forbid this up front.

Avoid NULL deref, since we don't generate names yet.
This patch adds a helper to determine if snapshots are external and uses
the helper to fix detection of those in snapshot deletion code.
Snapshots are external if they have an external memory image or if the
disk locations are external. As mixed snapshots are forbidden for now
we need to check just one disk to know.
There were not previous callers with require_match set to true.
I originally implemented this bool with the intent of supporting
ESX snapshot semantics, where the choice of internal vs. external
vs. non-checkpointable must be made at domain start, but as ESX
has not been wired up to use it yet, we might as well fix it to
work with our next qemu patch for now, and worry about any further
improvements (changing the bool to a flags argument) if the ESX
driver decides to use this function in the future.

Each <domainsnapshot> can now contain an optional <memory>
element that describes how the VM state was handled, similar
to disk snapshots. The new element will always appear in
output; for back-compat, an input that lacks the element will
assume 'no' or 'internal' according to the domain state.
Along with this change, it is now possible to pass <disks> in
the XML for an offline snapshot; this also needs to be wired up
in a future patch, to make it possible to choose internal vs.
external on a per-disk basis for each disk in an offline domain.
At that point, using the --disk-only flag for an offline domain
will be able to work.
For some examples below, remember that qemu supports the
following snapshot actions:
