There was one attempt a year ago done by me to drop HAL [1] but it was
never resolved. There was another time when Dan suggested to drop HAL
driver [2] but it was decided to keep it around in case device
assignment will be implemented for FreeBSD and the fact that
virt-manager uses node device driver [3].
I checked git history and code and it doesn't look like bhyve supports
device assignment so from that POV it should not block removing HAL.
The argument about virt-manager is not strong as well because libvirt
installed from FreeBSD packages doesn't have HAL support so it will not
affect these users as well [4].
The only users affected by this change would be the ones compiling
libvirt from GIT on FreeBSD.
I looked into alternatives and there is libudev-devd package on FreeBSD
but unfortunately it doesn't work as it doesn't list any devices when
used with libvirt. It provides libudev APIs using devd.
I also looked into devd directly and it provides some APIs but there are
no APIs for device monitoring and events so that would have to be
somehow done by libvirt.
Main motivation for dropping HAL support is to replace libdbus with GLib
dbus implementation and it cannot be done with HAL driver present in
libvirt because HAL APIs heavily depends on symbols provided by libdbus.

With recent additions to the node device xml schema, an xml schema can
now describe a mdev device sufficiently for libvirt to create and start
the device using the mdevctl utility.
Note that some of the the configuration for a mediated device must be
passed to mdevctl as a JSON-formatted file. In order to avoid creating
and cleaning up temporary files, the JSON is instead fed to stdin and we
pass the filename /dev/stdin to mdevctl. While this may not be portable,
neither are mediated devices, so I don't believe it should cause any
problems.

Require that all headers are guarded by a symbol named
LIBVIRT_$FILENAME
where $FILENAME is the uppercased filename, with all characters
outside a-z changed into '_'.
Note we do not use a leading __ because that is technically a
namespace reserved for the toolchain.

In many files there are header comments that contain an Author:
statement, supposedly reflecting who originally wrote the code.
In a large collaborative project like libvirt, any non-trivial
file will have been modified by a large number of different
contributors. IOW, the Author: comments are quickly out of date,
omitting people who have made significant contribitions.
In some places Author: lines have been added despite the person
merely being responsible for creating the file by moving existing
code out of another file. IOW, the Author: lines give an incorrect
record of authorship.
With this all in mind, the comments are useless as a means to identify
who to talk to about code in a particular file. Contributors will always
be better off using 'git log' and 'git blame' if they need to find the
author of a particular bit of code.
This commit thus deletes all Author: comments from the source and adds
a rule to prevent them reappearing.
The Copyright headers are similarly misleading and inaccurate, however,
we cannot delete these as they have legal meaning, despite being largely
inaccurate. In addition only the copyright holder is permitted to change
their respective copyright statement.

Allow the possibility of opening a connection to only the nodedev
driver, by defining nodedev:///system and nodedev:///session URIs
and registering a fake hypervisor driver that supports them.
The hypervisor drivers can now directly open a nodedev driver
connection at time of need, instead of having to pass around a
virConnectPtr through many functions. This will facilitate the later
change to support separate daemons for each driver.

Alter the node_device_driver source and prototypes to follow more
recent code style guidelines w/r/t spacing between functions, format
of the function, and the prototype definitions.
While the new names for nodeDeviceUpdateCaps, nodeDeviceUpdateDriverName,
and nodeDeviceGetTime don't follow exactly w/r/t a "vir" prefix, they
do follow other driver nomenclature style.

Move all the NodeDeviceObj API's into their own module virnodedeviceobj
from the node_device_conf
Purely code motion at this point, plus adjustments to cleanly build.
This file contains only a single function, detect_scsi_host_caps(),
which is declared in node_device_driver.h and called from both the hal
and udev backends. Other things common to the hal and udev drivers
can be placed in that file though. As a prelude to adding further
functions, this patch renames the existing function to something
closer in line with other internal libvirt function names
(nodeDeviceSysfsGetSCSIHostCaps()), and puts the declarations into a
separate .h file.
For some reason a union (_virNodeDevCapData) that had only been
declared inside the toplevel struct virNodeDevCapsDef was being used
as an argument to functions all over the place. Since it was only a
union, the "type" attribute wasn't necessarily sent with it. While
this works, it just seems wrong.
This patch creates a toplevel typedef for virNodeDevCapData and
virNodeDevCapDataPtr, making it a struct that has the type attribute
as a member, along with an anonymous union of everything that used to
be in union _virNodeDevCapData. This way we only have to change the
following:
s/union _virNodeDevCapData */virNodeDevCapDataPtr /
and
s/caps->type/caps->data.type/
This will make me feel less guilty when adding functions that need a
pointer to one of these.
In renaming driver API implementations to match the
public API naming scheme, a few cases in the node
device driver were missed.

In the non linux case some callers like gather_scsi_host_caps needed the
return code of -1 while others like update_caps needed an empty
statement (to avoid a "statement without effect" warning). This is much
simpler solved by using a function instead of a define.
The driver.h struct for node devices used an inconsistent
naming scheme 'DeviceMonitor' instead of the more usual
'NodeDeviceDriver'. Fix this everywhere it has leaked
out to.

This adds two util functions (virIsCapableFCHost and virIsCapableVport),
and rename helper check_fc_host_linux as detect_scsi_host_caps,
check_capable_vport_linux is removed, as it's abstracted to the util
function virIsCapableVport. detect_scsi_host_caps nows detect both
the fc_host and vport_ops capabilities. "stat(2)" is replaced with
"access(2)" for saving.

"open_wwn_file" in node_device_linux_sysfs.c is redundant, on one
hand it duplicates work of virFileReadAll, on the other hand, it's
waste to use a function for it, as there is no other users of it.
So I don't see why the file opening work cannot be done in
"read_wwn_linux".
"read_wwn_linux" can be abstracted as an util function. As what all
it does is to read the sysfs entry.
So this patch removes "open_wwn_file", and abstract "read_wwn_linux"
as an util function "virReadFCHost" (a more general name, because
after changes, it can read each of the fc_host entry now).

Some kernels, such as the one used in RHEL-5, have vport_create and
vport_delete operation files in /sys/class/scsi_host/hostN directory
instead of /sys/class/fc_host/hostN. Let's check both paths for
compatibility reasons.
This also removes unnecessary '/' characters from sysfs paths containing
LINUX_SYSFS_FC_HOST_PREFIX.
