happens while a running domain object is locked, QMP event delivered to

We've been doing a terrible job of performing XML validation in our
various API that parse XML with a corresponding schema (we started
with domains back in commit dd69a14f, v1.2.12, but didn't catch all
domain-related APIs, didn't document the use of the flag, and didn't
cover other XML). New APIs (like checkpoints) should do the validation
unconditionally, but it doesn't hurt to continue retrofitting existing
APIs to at least allow the option.
While there are many APIs that could be improved, this patch focuses
on wiring up a new snapshot XML creation flag through all the
hypervisors that support snapshots, as well as exposing it in 'virsh
snapshot-create'. For 'virsh snapshot-create-as', we blindly set the
flag without a command-line option, since the XML we create from the
command line should generally always comply (note that validation
might cause failures where it used to succeed, such as if we tighten
the RNG to reject a name of '../\n'); but blindly passing the flag
means we also have to add in fallback code to disable validation if
the server is too old to understand the flag.

The only use for the 'current' member of virDomainSnapshotDef was with
the PARSE/FORMAT_INTERNAL flag for controlling an internal-use
<active> element marking whether a particular snapshot definition was
current, and even then, only by the qemu driver on output, and by qemu
and test driver on input. But this duplicates vm->snapshot_current,
and gets in the way of potential simplifications to have qemu store a
single file for all snapshots rather than one file per snapshot. Get
rid of the member by adding a bool* parameter during parse (ignored if
the PARSE_INTERNAL flag is not set), and by adding a new flag during
format (if FORMAT_INTERNAL is set, the value printed in <active>
depends on the new FORMAT_CURRENT).
Then update the qemu driver accordingly, which involves hoisting
assignments to vm->current_snapshot to occur prior to any point where
a snapshot XML file is written (although qemu kept
vm->current_snapshot and snapshot->def_current in sync by the end of
the function, they were not always identical in the middle of
functions, so the shuffling gets a bit interesting). Later patches
will clean up some of that confusing churn to vm->current_snapshot.
Note: even if later patches refactor qemu to no longer use
FORMAT_INTERNAL for output (by storing bulk snapshot XML instead), we
will always need PARSE_INTERNAL for input (because on upgrade, a new
libvirt still has to parse XML left from a previous libvirt).

virDomainSnapshotDefFormat currently takes two sets of knobs:
an 'unsigned int flags' argument that can currently just be
VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_SECURE, and an 'int internal' argument used as
a bool to determine whether to output an additional element. It
then reuses the 'flags' knob to call into virDomainDefFormatInternal(),
which takes a different set of flags. In fact, prior to commit 0ecd6851
(1.2.12), the 'flags' argument actually took the public
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE, which was even more confusing. Let's borrow
from the style of that earlier commit, by introducing a function
for translating from the public flags (VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_XML_SECURE
was just recently introduced) into a new enum specific to snapshot
formatting, and adjust all callers to use snapshot-specific enum
values when formatting, and where the formatter now uses a new
variable 'domainflags' to make it obvious when we are translating
from snapshot flags back to domain flags. We don't even have to
use the conversion function for drivers that don't accept the

Many drivers had a comment that they did not validate the incoming
'flags' to virDomainGetXMLDesc() because they were relying on
virDomainDefFormat() to do it instead. This used to be the case
(at least since 461e0f1a and friends in 0.9.4 added unknown flag
checking in general), but regressed in commit 0ecd6851 (1.2.12),
when all of the drivers were changed to pass 'flags' through the
new helper virDomainDefFormatConvertXMLFlags(). Since this helper
silently ignores unknown flags, we need to implement flag checking
in each driver instead.
Annoyingly, this means that any new flag values added will silently
be ignored when targeting an older libvirt, rather than our usual
practice of loudly diagnosing an unsupported flag. Add comments
in domain_conf.[ch] to remind us to be extra vigilant about the
impact when adding flags (a new flag to add data is safe if the
older server omitting the requested data doesn't break things in
the newer client; a new flag to suppress data rather than enhancing
the existing VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE may form a data leak or even a
security hole).
In the qemu driver, there are multiple callers all funnelling to
qemuDomainDefFormatBufInternal(); many of them already validated
flags (and often only a subset of the full set of possible flags),
but for ease of maintenance, we can also check flags at the common
helper function.

Not only does this kind of error handling look quite
alien in the context of libvirt, where most functions
return zero on success and a negative int on failure,

If you use the VDDK library to access virtual machines remotely, you
really need to know the Managed Object Reference ("moref") of the VM.
This must be passed each time you connect to the API.
For example nbdkit's VDDK plugin requires a moref to be passed to
mount up a VM's disk remotely:
nbdkit vddk user=root password=+/tmp/rootpw \
server=esxi.example.com thumbprint=xx:xx:xx:... \
vm=moref=2 \
file="[datastore1] Fedora/Fedora.vmdk"
Getting the moref is a huge pain. To get some idea of what it is, why
it is needed, and how much trouble it is to get it, see:
https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/uniquely-identifying-virtual-machines-in-vsphere-and-vcloud-part-1-overview.htmlhttps://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/uniquely-identifying-virtual-machines-in-vsphere-and-vcloud-part-2-technical.html
However the moref is available conveniently in the internals of the
libvirt VMX driver. This patch exposes it as a custom XML element
using the same "vmware:" namespace which was previously used for the
datacenterpath (see libvirt commit 636a990587).
It appears in the XML like this:
<domain type='vmware' xmlns:vmware='http://libvirt.org/schemas/domain/vmware/1.0'>
<name>Fedora</name>
...
<vmware:datacenterpath>ha-datacenter</vmware:datacenterpath>
<vmware:moref>2</vmware:moref>
</domain>
Note that the moref can appear as either a simple ID (for esx://
connections) or as a "vm-<ID>" (for vpx:// connections). It should be
treated by users as an opaque string.

the esx/vcenter password contains special characters such as
apostrophee. The reason for failures was that passwords were escaped
for XML and stored in esxVI_Context which was then passed to raw CURL
API calls where the password must be passed in original form to
authenticate successfully. So this patch addresses this by storing
original passwords in the esxVI_Context struct and escape only for
esxVI_Login call.
A login session with the vSphere API might expire after some idle time.
The esxVI_EnsureSession function uses the SessionIsActive function to
check if the current session has expired and a relogin needs to be done.
But the SessionIsActive function needs the Sessions.ValidateSession
privilege that is considered as an admin level privilege.
Only vCenter actually provides the SessionIsActive function. This results
in requiring an admin level privilege even for read-only operations on
a vCenter server.
ESX and VMware Server don't provide the SessionIsActive function and
the code already works around that. Use the same workaround for vCenter
again.
This basically reverts commit 5699034b65.
The virDomainSnapshotDefFormat calls into virDomainDefFormat,
so should be providing a non-NULL virCapsPtr instance. On the
qemu driver we change qemuDomainSnapshotWriteMetadata to also
include caps since it calls virDomainSnapshotDefFormat.

This change ensures to call driver specific post-parse code to modify
domain definition after parsing hypervisor config the same way we do
after parsing XML.

Our domain_conf.* files are big enough. Not only they contain XML
parsing code, but they served as a storage of all functions whose
name is virDomain prefixed. This is just wrong as it gathers not
related functions (and modules) into one big file which is then
harder to maintain. Split virDomainObjList module into a separate
file called virdomainobjlist.[ch].

Tool such as libguestfs need the datacenter path to get access to disk
images. The ESX driver knows the correct datacenter path, but this
information cannot be accessed using libvirt API yet. Also, it cannot
be deduced from the connection URI in a robust way.
Expose the datacenter path in the domain XML as <vmware:datacenterpath>
node similar to the way the <qemu:commandline> node works. The new node
is ignored while parsing the domain XML. In contrast to <qemu:commandline>
it is output only.
This needs to specified in way too many places for a simple validation
check. The ostype/arch/virttype validation checks later in
DomainDefParseXML should catch most of the cases that this was covering.
Before this patch, when connected via vCenter, the free memory returned
was from the resorcePool (usually a cluster). This is in conflict with
e.g esxNodeGetInfo which always pulls info from the ESX host.
Since libvirt ESX driver works primarily with ESX hosts, this patch
changes esxNodeGetFreeMemory to pull that information from ESX host so
it's consistent with behavior of esxNodeGetInfo.
Return 0 instead of ERR_NO_SUPPORT in each driver
where we don't support managed save or -1 if
the domain does not exist.
This avoids spamming daemon logs when 'virsh dominfo' is run.

For stateless, client side drivers, it is never correct to
probe for secondary drivers. It is only ever appropriate to
use the secondary driver that is associated with the
hypervisor in question. As a result the ESX & HyperV drivers
have both been forced to do hacks where they register no-op
drivers for the ones they don't implement.
For stateful, server side drivers, we always just want to
use the same built-in shared driver. The exception is
virtualbox which is really a stateless driver and so wants
to use its own server side secondary drivers. To deal with
this virtualbox has to be built as 3 separate loadable
modules to allow registration to work in the right order.
This can all be simplified by introducing a new struct
recording the precise set of secondary drivers each
hypervisor driver wants
struct _virConnectDriver {
virHypervisorDriverPtr hypervisorDriver;
virInterfaceDriverPtr interfaceDriver;
virNetworkDriverPtr networkDriver;
virNodeDeviceDriverPtr nodeDeviceDriver;
virNWFilterDriverPtr nwfilterDriver;
virSecretDriverPtr secretDriver;
virStorageDriverPtr storageDriver;
};
Instead of registering the hypervisor driver, we now
just register a virConnectDriver instead. This allows
us to remove all probing of secondary drivers. Once we
have chosen the primary driver, we immediately know the
correct secondary drivers to use.

Clang found possible dereference of NULL pointer which is right.
Function 'esxVI_LookupTaskInfoByTask' should find a task info. The issue
is that we could return 0 and leave 'taksInfo' pointer NULL because if
there is no match we simply end the search loop end set 'result' to 0.
Every caller count on the fact that if the return value is 0 than it's
safe to dereference 'taskInfo'. We should return 0 only in case we found
something and the '*taskInfo' is not NULL.

The virDomainDefineXMLFlags and virDomainCreateXML APIs both
gain new flags allowing them to be told to validate XML.
This updates all the drivers to turn on validation in the
XML parser when the flags are set
The virDomainDefParse* and virDomainDefFormat* methods both
accept the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_* flags defined in the public API,
along with a set of other VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INTERNAL_* flags
defined in domain_conf.c.
This is seriously confusing & error prone for a number of
reasons:
- VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_MIGRATABLE and
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_UPDATE_CPU are only relevant for the
formatting operation
- Some of the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INTERNAL_* flags only apply
to parse or to format, but not both.
This patch cleanly separates out the flags. There are two
distint VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_PARSE_* and VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_*
flags that are used by the corresponding methods. The
VIR_DOMAIN_XML_* flags received via public API calls must
be converted to the VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_FORMAT_* flags where
needed.
The various calls to virDomainDefParse which hardcoded the
use of the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_INACTIVE flag change to use the
VIR_DOMAIN_DEF_PARSE_INACTIVE flag.
Since virDomainFree will call virObjectUnref anyway, let's just use that
directly so as to avoid the possibility that we inadvertently clear out
a pending error message when using the public API.
Store version numbers in this format
version = 1000000 * major + 1000 * minor + micro
produced by virParseVersionString instead of dedicated enums.
Split the complex esxVI_ProductVersion enum into a simpler
esxVI_ProductLine enum and a product version number.
Relax API and product version number checks to accept everything that
is equal or greater than the supported minimum version. VMware ESX
went through 3 major versions and the vSphere API always stayed
backward compatible. This commit assumes that this will also be true
for future VMware ESX versions.
Also reword error messages in esxConnectTo* to say what was expected
and what was found instead (suggested by Richard W.M. Jones).
Since the secondary drivers are only active when the primary
driver is also the ESX driver, there is no need to use the
different type specific privateData fields.
To prepare for introducing a single global driver, rename the
virDriver struct to virHypervisorDriver and the registration
API to virRegisterHypervisorDriver()
This implementation uses the https://esx-server/screen?id=<id> way to get
a screenshot of a running domain. Compared to the CreateScreenshot_Task
way this works since ESX 2.5 while CreateScreenshot_Task was added in
version 4.0.
The newly added libcurl stream driver is used to directly provide the
downloaded data without saving it to a temporary file first.
This allows to implement libvirt functions that use streams, such as
virDoaminScreenshot, without the need to store the downloaded data in
a temporary file first. The stream driver directly interacts with
libcurl to send and receive data.
The driver uses the libcurl multi interface that allows to do a transfer
in multiple curl_multi_perform() calls. The easy interface would do the
whole transfer in a single curl_easy_perform() call. This doesn't work
with the libvirt stream API that is driven by multiple calls to the
virStreamSend() and virStreamRecv() functions.
The curl_multi_wait() function is used to do blocking operations. But it
was added in libcurl 7.28.0. For older versions it is emulated using the
socket callback of the multi interface.
The current driver only supports blocking operations. There is already
some code in place for non-blocking mode but it is not complete.
Replace:
if (virBufferError(&buf)) {
virBufferFreeAndReset(&buf);
virReportOOMError();
...
}
with:
if (virBufferCheckError(&buf) < 0)
...
This should not be a functional change (unless some callers
misused the virBuffer APIs - a different error would be reported
then)
So far, we only report an error if formatting the siblings bitmap
in NUMA topology fails.
Be consistent and always report error in virCapabilitiesFormatXML.
Since the ESX storage implements VMFS and iSCSI storage backends and
chooses relevant backend dynamically at runtime, there was a segfault
when issuing vol-info on iSCSI volume due to unimplemented
virStorageGetInfo function. This patch implements that function that was
missing in iSCSI backend and returns expected result without a segfault.
One of the features of qcow2 is that a wrapper file can have
more capacity than its backing file from the guest's perspective;
what's more, sparse files make tracking allocation of both
the active and backing file worthwhile. As such, it makes
more sense to show allocation numbers for each file in a chain,
and not just the top-level file. This sets up the fields for
the tracking, although it does not modify XML to display any
new information.

New coverity installation determined that the muliple if condition for

Add support for creating disk-only (no memory) snapshots in esx, and
for quiescing the VM before taking the snapshot. The VMware API
supports these operations directly, so adding support to libvirt is
just a matter of setting the flags correctly when calling
VMware. VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_CREATE_DISK_ONLY and
VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_CREATE_QUIESCE are now valid flags for esx.

VI objects support inheritance with subtype polymorphism. For example the
FileInfo object type is extended by FloppyImageFileInfo, FolderFileInfo
etc. Then SearchDatastore_Task returns an array of FileInfo objects and
depending on the represented file the FileInfo is actually a FolderFileInfo
or FloppyImageFileInfo etc. The actual type information is stored as XML
attribute that allows clients such as libvirt to distinguish between the
actual types. esxVI_GetActualObjectType is used to extract the actual type.
I assumed that this mechanism would be used for all VI object types that
have subtypes. But this is not the case. It seems only to be used for types
that are actually used as generic base type such as FileInfo. But it is not
used for types that got extended later such as ElementDescription that was
extended by ExtendedElementDescription (added in vSphere API 4.0) or that
are not meant to be used with subtype polymorphism.
This breaks the deserialization of types that contain ElementDescription
properties such as PerfCounterInfo or ChoiceOption, because the code
expects an ElementDescription object to have an XML attribute named type
that is not present, since ExtendedElementDescription was added to the
esx_vi_generator.input in commit 60f0f55ee4.
This in turn break virtual machine question handling and auto answering.
Fix this by using the base type if no XML type attribute is present.
These all existed before virfile.c was created, and for some reason
weren't moved.
This is mostly straightfoward, although the syntax rule prohibiting
write() had to be changed to have an exception for virfile.c instead
of virutil.c.
This movement pointed out that there is a function called
virBuildPath(), and another almost identical function called
virFileBuildPath(). They really should be a single function, which
I'll take care of as soon as I figure out what the arglist should look
like.
The previous update of method naming missed the ESX storage
backend files. Update them is that the driver impl methods
follow the naming of the public API but with s/vir/esx/
