ac4a12db71 libxl: don't set hasManagedSave when performing save
libxlDoDomainSave() is used in both the save and managedsave code
paths but was unconditionally setting hasManagedSave to true on
success. As a result, undefine would fail after a non-managed
save/restore operation. E.g.

virsh define; virsh start
virsh save; virsh restore
virsh shutdown
virsh undefine
error: Refusing to undefine while domain managed save image exists

Modify libxlDoDomainSave() to take an additional parameter to
specify managed vs non-managed save, and change callers to use it.

b04629b629 conf: Clean up object referencing for Add and Remove
When adding a new object to the domain object list, there should
have been 2 virObjectRef calls made one for each list into which
the object was placed to match the 2 virObjectUnref calls that
would occur during Remove as part of virHashRemoveEntry when
virObjectFreeHashData is called when the element is removed from
the hash table as set up in virDomainObjListNew.

Some drivers (libxl, lxc, qemu, and vz) handled this inconsistency
by calling virObjectRef upon successful return from virDomainObjListAdd
in order to use virDomainObjEndAPI when done with the returned @vm.
While others (bhyve, openvz, test, and vmware) handled this via only
calling virObjectUnlock upon successful return from virDomainObjListAdd.

This patch will "unify" the approach to use virDomainObjEndAPI
for any @vm successfully returned from virDomainObjListAdd.

Because list removal is so tightly coupled with list addition,
this patch fixes the list removal algorithm to return the object
as entered - "locked and reffed". This way, the callers can then
decide how to uniformly handle add/remove success and failure.
This removes the onus on the caller to "specially handle" the
@vm during removal processing.

The Add/Remove logic allows for some logic simplification such
as in libxl where we can Remove the @vm directly rather than
needing to set a @remove_dom boolean and removing after the
libxlDomainObjEndJob completes as the @vm is locked/reffed.

Rework the code such that virDomainObjListFindByID will always
return a locked/ref counted object so that the callers can
always do the same cleanup logic to call virDomainObjEndAPI.
Makes accessing the objects much more consistent.

NB:
There were 2 callers (lxcDomainLookupByID and qemuDomainLookupByID)

10f94828ea virobject: Introduce VIR_CLASS_NEW() macro
So far we are repeating the following lines over and over:

  if (!(virSomeObjectClass = virClassNew(virClassForObject(),
                             "virSomeObject",
                             sizeof(virSomeObject),
                             virSomeObjectDispose)))
      return -1;

While this works, it is impossible to do some checking. Firstly,
the class name (the 2nd argument) doesn't match the name in the
code in all cases (the 3rd argument). Secondly, the current style
is needlessly verbose. This commit turns example into following:

  if (!(VIR_CLASS_NEW(virSomeObject,
                      virClassForObject)))
      return -1;

Libxl do not have distinction between "force" and "required" policy

and "forbid" should be enforced outside of specific driver.

83edaf4435 libxl: don't hardcode scheduler weight
Long ago in commit dfa1e1dd53 the scheduler weight was accidentally
hardcoded to 1000. Weight is a setting with no unit since it is
relative to the weight of other domains. If no weight is specified,
libxl defaults to 256.

Instead of hardcoding the weight to 1000, honor any <shares> specified
in <cputune>. libvirt's notion of shares is synonomous to libxl's
scheduler weight setting. If shares is unspecified, defer default
weight setting to libxl.

Removing the hardcoded weight required some test fixup. While at it,
add an explicit test for <shares> conversion to scheduler weight.

a302480dcb conf: add enum constants for default controller models

existing enum cases. This in turn means that any switch() statements

During migration, the lock process is paused in the perform phase
but not resumed if there is a subsequent failure, leaving the locked
resource unprotected.

The perform phase itself can fail, in which case the lock process
should be resumed before returning from perform. The finish phase
could also fail on the destination host, in which case the migration
is canceled in the confirm phase and the VM is resumed. The lock
process needs to be resumed there as well.

8c85b1ed4a conf: merge virDomainLifecycleCrashAction with virDomainLifecycleAction
There is no need to have two different enums where one has the same

Currently for on_poweroff and on_reboot we allow only subset of actions

actions that are not supported we need to check it while validating

2065499b60 events: Avoid double free possibility on remote call failure
If a remote call fails during event registration (more than likely from
a network failure or remote libvirtd restart timed just right), then when
calling the virObjectEventStateDeregisterID we don't want to call the
registered @freecb function because that breaks our contract that we
would only call it after succesfully returning. If the @freecb routine
were called, it could result in a double free from properly coded
applications that free their opaque data on failure to register, as seen
in the following details:

Program terminated with signal 6, Aborted.
    #0 0x00007fc45cba15d7 in raise
    #1 0x00007fc45cba2cc8 in abort
    #2 0x00007fc45cbe12f7 in __libc_message
    #3 0x00007fc45cbe86d3 in _int_free
    #4 0x00007fc45d8d292c in PyDict_Fini
    #5 0x00007fc45d94f46a in Py_Finalize
    #6 0x00007fc45d960735 in Py_Main
    #7 0x00007fc45cb8daf5 in __libc_start_main
    #8 0x0000000000400721 in _start

The double dereference of 'pyobj_cbData' is triggered in the following way:

    (1) libvirt_virConnectDomainEventRegisterAny is invoked.
    (2) the event is successfully added to the event callback list
        (virDomainEventStateRegisterClient in
remoteConnectDomainEventRegisterAny returns 1 which means ok).
    (3) when function remoteConnectDomainEventRegisterAny is hit,
network connection disconnected coincidently (or libvirtd is
restarted) in the context of function 'call' then the connection
is lost and the function 'call' failed, the branch
        virObjectEventStateDeregisterID is therefore taken.
    (4) 'pyobj_conn' is dereferenced the 1st time in
        libvirt_virConnectDomainEventFreeFunc.
    (5) 'pyobj_cbData' (refered to pyobj_conn) is dereferenced the
         2nd time in libvirt_virConnectDomainEventRegisterAny.
    (6) the double free error is triggered.

Resolve this by adding a @doFreeCb boolean in order to avoid calling the
freeCb in virObjectEventStateDeregisterID for any remote call failure in
a remoteConnect*EventRegister* API. For remoteConnect*EventDeregister* calls,
the passed value would be true indicating they should run the freecb if it
exists; whereas, it's false for the remote call failure path.

fangying <fangying1@huawei.com>.

 * libxlDoMigrateSend() -> pipe libxlTunnel3MigrationFunc() polls pipe
 * out and then write to dest stream.

While on the destination side:

d2b77608e9 libxl: fix reporting of maximum memory
The libxl driver reports different values of maximum memory depending
on state of a domain. If inactive, maximum memory value is reported
correctly. When active, maximum memory is derived from max_pages value
returned by the XEN_SYSCTL_getdomaininfolist sysctl operation. But
max_pages can be changed by toolstacks and does not necessarily
represent the maximum memory a domain can use during its active
lifetime.

A better location for determining a domain's maximum memory is the
/local/domain/<id>/memory/static-max node in xenstore. This value
is set from the libxl_domain_build_info.max_memkb field when creating
the domain. Currently it cannot be changed nor can its value be
exceeded by a balloon operation. From libvirt's perspective, always
reporting maximum memory with virDomainDefGetMemoryTotal() will produce
the same results as reading the static-max node in xenstore.

bd1168101a libxl: fix disk detach when <driver> not specified
When a user does not explicitly set a <driver> in the disk config,
libvirt defers selection of a default to libxl. This approach works
fine when starting a domain with such configuration or attaching a
disk to a running domain. But when detaching such a disk, libxl
will fail with "unrecognized disk backend type: 0". libxl makes no
attempt to recalculate a default backend (driver) on detach and
simply fails when uninitialized.

This patch updates the libvirt disk config with the backend selected
by libxl when starting a domain or attaching a disk to a running
domain. Another benefit of this approach is that the live XML is
also updated with the backend driver selected by libxl.

321a28c6ae libxl: set default disk format in device post-parse

virDomainDef. Any virDomainDiskDef devices with a format of
VIR_STORAGE_FILE_NONE are mapped to LIBXL_DISK_FORMAT_RAW in the

never updated to reflect the change.

A better place to set a default format for disk devices is the
device post-parse callback, ensuring the virDomainDiskDef object
reflects the default format.

f86a7a8372 libxl: fix dom0 autoballooning with Xen 4.8
xen.git commit 57f8b13c changed several of the libxl memory
get/set functions to take 64 bit parameters. The libvirt
libxl driver still uses uint32_t variables for these various
parameters, which is particularly problematic for the
libxl_set_memory_target() function.

When dom0 autoballooning is enabled, libvirt (like xl) determines
the memory needed to start a domain and the memory available. If
memory available is less than memory needed, dom0 is ballooned
down by passing a negative value to libxl_set_memory_target()
'target_memkb' parameter. Prior to xen.git commit 57f8b13c,
'target_memkb' was an int32_t. Subtracting a larger uint32 from
a smaller uint32 and assigning it to int32 resulted in a negative
number. After commit 57f8b13c, the same subtraction is widened
to a int64, resulting in a large positive number. The simple
fix taken by this patch is to assign the difference of the
uint32 values to a temporary int32 variable, which is then
passed to 'target_memkb' parameter of libxl_set_memory_target().

Note that it is undesirable to change libvirt to use 64 bit
variables since it requires setting LIBXL_API_VERSION to 0x040800.
Currently libvirt supports LIBXL_API_VERSION >= 0x040400,
essentially Xen >= 4.4.

de8607d77d libxl: reverse defaults on HVM net device attach
libvirt libxl picks its own default with respect to the default NIC
to use. libxlMakeNic is the one responsible for this and on boot it
picks LIBXL_NIC_TYPE_VIF_IOEMU for HVM domains such that it accomodates
both PV and emulated one. The good behaving guest at boot will then
select the pv and unplug the emulated device.

Now, on HVM when attaching an interface it will pick the same default
that is LIBXL_NIC_TYPE_VIF_IOEMU which as a result will fail the attach
(see xen commit 32e9d0f ("libxl: nic type defaults to vif in hotplug for
hvm guest"). Xen doesn't yet support the hotplug of emulated devices,
but we don't want to rule out that case either, which might get support
in the future. Hence we simply reverse the defaults when we are
attaching the interface which allows libvirt to prefer the PV nic first
without adding "model='netfront'" following the same pattern as above
commit. Also to avoid ruling out the emulated one we set to
LIBXL_NIC_TYPE_IOEMU when setting a model type that is not 'netfront'.

719b663fad libxl: channels support
And allow libxl to handle channel element which creates a Xen
console visible to the guest as a low-bandwitdh communication
channel. If type is PTY we also fetch the tty after boot using
libxl_channel_getinfo to fetch the tty path. On socket case,
we autogenerate a path if not specified in the XML. Path autogenerated
is slightly different from qemu driver: qemu stores also on
"channels/target" but it creates then a directory per domain with
each channel target name. libxl doesn't appear to have a clear
definition of private files associated with each domain, so for
simplicity we do it slightly different. On qemu each autogenerated
channel goes like:

channels/target/<domain-name>/<target name>

Whereas for libxl:

channels/target/<domain-name>-<target name>

Should note that if path is not specified it won't persist,
existing only on live XML, unless user had initially specified it.
Since support for libxl channels only came on Xen >= 4.5 we therefore
need to conditionally compile it with LIBXL_HAVE_DEVICE_CHANNEL.

After this patch and having a qemu guest agent:
 $ cat domain.xml | grep -a1 channel | head -n 5 | tail -n 4

7b3cf84bbb libxl: find virDomainObj in libxlDomainShutdownThread
libxl events are delivered to libvirt via the libxlDomainEventHandler
callback registered with libxl. Documenation in
$xensrc/tools/libxl/libxl_event.h states that the callback "may occur
on any thread in which the application calls libxl". This can result
in deadlock since many of the libvirt callees of libxl hold a lock on
the virDomainObj they are working on. When the callback is invoked, it
attempts to find a virDomainObj corresponding to the domain ID provided
by libxl. Searching the domain obj list results in locking each obj
before checking if it is active, and its ID equals the requested ID.
Deadlock is possible when attempting to lock an obj that is already
locked further up the call stack. Indeed, Max Ustermann reported an
instance of this deadlock

https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2015-November/msg00130.html

Guido Rossmueller also recently stumbled across it

https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2016-September/msg00287.html

Fix the deadlock by moving the lookup of virDomainObj to the
libxlDomainShutdownThread. After this patch, libxl events are
enqueued on the libvirt side and processed by dedicated thread,
avoiding the described deadlock.

eee7bd4ecb libxl: implement virDomainBlockStats
Introduce initial support for domainBlockStats API call that
allow us to query block device statistics. OpenStack nova
uses this API call to query block statistics, alongside
virDomainMemoryStats and virDomainInterfaceStats. Note that
this patch only introduces it for VBD for starters. QDisk
would come in a separate patch series.

A new statistics data structure is introduced to fit common
statistics among others specific to the underlying block
backends. For the VBD statistics on linux these are exported
via sysfs on the path:

"/sys/bus/xen-backend/devices/vbd-<domid>-<devid>/statistics"

To calculate the block devno libxlDiskPathToID is introduced.
Each backend implements its own function to extract statistics,
allowing support for multiple backends and different platforms.

VBD stats are exposed in reqs and number of sectors from
blkback, and it's up to us to convert it to sector sizes.
The sector size is gathered through xenstore in the device
backend entry "physical-sector-size".

BlockStatsFlags variant is also implemented which has the
added benefit of getting the number of flush requests.

5325123d23 libxl: support Xen migration stream V2 in save/restore
Xen 4.6 introduced a new migration stream commonly referred to as
"migration V2". Xen 4.6 and newer always produce this new stream,
whereas Xen 4.5 and older always produce the legacy stream.
Support for migration stream V2 can be detected at build time with
LIBXL_HAVE_SRM_V2 from libxl.h. The legacy and V2 streams are not
compatible, but a V2 host can accept and convert a legacy stream.

Commit e7440656 changed the libxl driver to use the lowest libxl
API version possible (version 0x040200) to ensure the driver
builds against older Xen releases. The old 4.2 restore API does
not support specifying a stream version and assumes a legacy
stream, even if the incoming stream is migration V2. Thinking it
has been given a legacy stream, libxl will fail to convert an
incoming stream that is already V2, which causes the entire
restore operation to fail. Xen's libvirt-related OSSTest has been
failing since commit e7440656 landed in libvirt.git master. One
of the more recent failures can be seen here

http://lists.xenproject.org/archives/html/xen-devel/2016-05/msg00071.html

This patch changes the call to libxl_domain_create_restore() to
include the stream version if LIBXL_HAVE_SRM_V2 is defined. The
version field of the libxlSavefileHeader struct is also updated
to '2' when LIBXL_HAVE_SRM_V2 is defined, ensuring the stream
version in the header matches the actual stream version produced
by Xen. Along with bumping the libxl API requirement to 0x040400,
this patch fixes save/restore on a migration V2 Xen host.

Oddly, migration has never used the libxlSavefileHeader. It
handles passing configuration in the Begin and Prepare phases,
and then calls libxl directly to transfer domain state/memory
in the Perform phase. A subsequent patch will add stream
version handling in the Begin and Prepare phase handshaking,
which will fix the migration related OSSTest failures.

e744065679 libxl: use LIBXL_API_VERSION 0x040200
To ensure the libvirt libxl driver will build with future versions
of Xen where the libxl API may change in incompatible ways,

currently it does not make use of any changes made to existing
APIs such as libxl_domain_create_restore or libxl_set_vcpuaffinity.
The version can be bumped if/when the libxl driver consumes the
changed APIs.

45fc2c1436 libxl: fix resource leaks in libxlDomainStart error paths
libxlDomainStart allocates and reserves resources that were not
being released in error paths. libxlDomainCleanup already handles
the job of releasing resources, and libxlDomainStart should call
it when encountering a failure.

Change the error handling logic to call libxlDomainCleanup on
failure. This includes acquiring the lease sooner and allowing
it to be released in libxlDomainCleanup on failure, similar to
the way other resources are reclaimed. With the lease now
released in libxlDomainCleanup, the release_dom label can be
renamed to cleanup_dom to better reflect its changed semantics.

77fdd82e51 libxl: implement virDomainInterfaceStats

network interface statistics. Consequently it also enables the use of
`virsh domifstat <dom> <interface name>` command plus seeing the

After successful guest creation we fill the network interfaces names
based on domain, device id and append suffix if it's emulated in the
following form: vif<domid>.<devid>[-emu]. We extract the network
interfaces info from the libxl_domain_config object in
libxlDomainCreateIfaceNames() to generate ifname. On domain cleanup we
also clear ifname, in case it was set by libvirt (i.e. being prefixed
with "vif"). We also skip these two steps in case the name of the
interface was manually inserted by the administrator. Since the
introduction of netprefix (commit a040ba9), ifnames with a registered
prefix will be freed on virDomain{Obj,Def}Format*, thus eliminating
the migration issues observed with the reverted commit d2e5538 whereas
source and destination would have the same ifname.

For getting the interface statistics we resort to virNetInterfaceStats
and let libvirt handle the platform specific nits. Note that the
latter is not yet supported in FreeBSD.

a79da2457e libxl: add p2p migration
Introduce support for VIR_MIGRATE_PEER2PEER in libvirt migration.
Most of the changes occur at the source and no modifications at
the receiver.

In P2P mode there is only the Perform phase so we must handle the
connection with the destination and actually perform the
migration. libxlDomainPerformP2P implements the connection to the
destination and libxlDoMigrateP2P implements the actual migration
logic with virConnectPtr. In this function we take care of doing
all phases of migration in the destination similar to
virDomainMigrateVersion3Full. We appropriately save the last
error reported in each of the phases to provide proper reporting.
We don't yet support VIR_MIGRATE_TUNNELED and we always use V3
with extensible params, thus it also makes the implementation
simpler.

It is worth noting that the receiver didn't have any changes, and
since it's still the v3 sequence thus it is possible to migrate
from a P2P to non-P2P host.

36785c7e77 device: cleanup input device code
The current code was a little bit odd. At first we've removed all
possible implicit input devices from domain definition to add them later
back if there was any graphics device defined while parsing XML
description. That's not all, while formating domain definition to XML
description we at first ignore any input devices with bus different to
USB and VIRTIO and few lines later we add implicit input devices to XML.

This seems to me as a lot of code for nothing. This patch may look
to be more complicated than original approach, but this is a preferred
way to modify/add driver specific stuff only in those drivers and not
deal with them in common parsing/formating functions.

The update is to add those implicit input devices into config XML to
follow the real HW configuration visible by guest OS.

There was also inconsistence between our behavior and QEMU's in the way,
that in QEMU there is no way how to disable those implicit input devices
for x86 architecture and they are available always, even without graphics
device. This applies also to XEN hypervisor. VZ driver already does its
part by putting correct implicit devices into live XML.

e4ac5919ba Revert "libxl: implement virDomainInterfaceStats"
This reverts commit d2e5538b16.

A migration regression was introduced by this commit. When migrating
a domain, its active XML is sent to the destination libvirtd, where
it is parsed as inactive XML. d2e5538b copied the libxl generated
interface name into the active config, which was being passed to the
migration destination and being parsed into inactive config. Attempting
to start the config could result in failure if an interface with the
same generated name already exists.

The qemu driver behaves similarly, but the parser contains a hack to
skip interface names starting with 'vnet' when parsing inactive XML.
We could extend the hack to skip names starting with 'vif' too, but a
better fix would be to expose these hypervisor-specific interface name
prefixes in capabilities. See the following discussion thread for more
details

https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2015-December/msg00262.html

For the pending 1.3.0 release, it is best to revert d2e5538b. It can
be added again post release, after moving the prefix to capabilities.

8059a99025 conf: Rename max_balloon to total_memory
The name of the variable was misleading. Rename it and it's setting
accessor before other fixes.

5dd61a168f libxl: vz: Use accessor instead of direct access for max_balloon
Commits 45697fe5 and f863ac80 used direct access to the variable instead
of the preferred accessor method.

56945e1374 libxl: fix AttachDeviceConfig on hostdev type
After attach-device a <hostdev> with --config, new device doesn't
show up in dumpxml and in guest.

To fix that, set dev->data.hostdev = NULL after work so that the
pointer is not freed, since vmdef has the pointer and still need it.

ba25c214f7 libxl: open libxl log stream with libvirtd log_level
Instead of a hardcoded DEBUG log level, use the overall
daemon log level specified in libvirtd.conf when opening
a log stream with libxl. libxl is very verbose when DEBUG
log level is set, resulting in huge log files that can
potentially fill a disk. Control of libxl verbosity should
be placed in the administrator's hands.
