78c018693b nodedev: Introduce new drm cap
After 7f1bdec5fa our nodedev driver is capable of

though: virConnectListAllNodeDevices() is capable of listing
either all devices or just those with specified capability. Well,
DRM capability is missing there.

0c234889c4 storage: Introduce virStorageVolInfoFlags
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1332019

This function will essentially be a wrapper to virStorageVolInfo in order
to provide a mechanism to have the "physical" size of the volume returned
instead of the "allocation" size. This will provide similar capabilities to
the virDomainBlockInfo which can return both allocation and physical of a
domain storage volume.

NB: Since we're reusing the _virStorageVolInfo and not creating a new
_virStorageVolInfoFlags structure, we'll need to generate the rpc APIs
remoteStorageVolGetInfoFlags and remoteDispatchStorageVolGetInfoFlags
(although both were originally created from gendispatch.pl and then
just copied into daemon/remote.c and src/remote/remote_driver.c).

The new API will allow the usage of a VIR_STORAGE_VOL_GET_PHYSICAL flag
and will make the decision to return the physical or allocation value
into the allocation field.

In order to get that physical value, virStorageBackendUpdateVolTargetInfoFD
adds logic to fill in physical value matching logic in qemuStorageLimitsRefresh
used by virDomainBlockInfo when the domain is inactive.

  Author: Jim Meyering <meyering@fb.com>

    manywarnings: add -fno-common

This caused libvirt Mingw build to break with the compiler
reporting 100's of definitions of virConnectAuthPtrDefault

./.libs/libvirt_util.a(libvirt_util_la-virarch.o):virarch.c:(.bss+0x0): multiple definition of `virConnectAuthPtrDefault'
./.libs/libvirt_util.a(libvirt_util_la-viralloc.o):viralloc.c:(.bss+0x0): first defined here

./.libs/libvirt_util.a(libvirt_util_la-viralloc.o):/home/berrange/src/virt/libvirt/src/util/viralloc.c:87: first defined here
./.libs/libvirt_util.a(libvirt_util_la-virauthconfig.o):virauthconfig.c:(.bss+0x0): multiple definition of `virConnectAuthPtrDefault'
...snip...

The cause is our VIR_EXPORT_VAR macro which has some
magic on win to add dllexport/dllimport to the variable
declaration. Unfortunately the dllexport branch missed
off the 'extern' keyword, so the header file was in
fact declaring an instance of the variable in every
source file.

Previously the linker would merge all these definitions
into one, but that no longer happens due to -fno-common

13350a17e4 conf: Add new secret type "tls"
Add a new secret usage type known as "tls" - it will handle adding the
secret objects for various TLS objects that need to provide some sort
of passphrase in order to access the credentials.

The format is:

   <secret ephemeral='no' private='no'>
     <description>Sample TLS secret</description>
     <usage type='tls'>
       <name>mumblyfratz</name>
     </usage>
</secret>

Once defined and a passphrase set, future patches will allow the UUID
to be set in the qemu.conf file and thus used as a secret for various
TLS options such as a chardev serial TCP connection, a NBD client/server
connection, and migration.

2197ea56d7 conf: Add IOThread quota and period scheduler/cputune defs
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1356937

Add the definitions to allow for viewing/setting cgroup period and quota
limits for IOThreads.

This is similar to the work done for emulator quota and period by
commit ids 'b65dafa' and 'e051c482'.

Being able to view/set the IOThread specific values is related to more
recent changes adding global period (commmit id '4d92d58f') and global
quota (commit id '55ecdae') definitions and qemu support (commit id
'4e17ff79' and 'fbcbd1b2'). With a global setting though, if somehow
the IOThread value in the cgroup hierarchy was set "outside of libvirt"
to a value that is incompatible with the global value.

Allowing control over IOThread specific values provides the capability
to alter the IOThread values as necessary.

90b9995d1d perf: add support to perf event for MBM
Some Intel processor families (e.g. the Intel Xeon processor E5 v3
family) introduced some RDT (Resource Director Technology) features
to monitor or control shared resource. Among these features, MBM
(Memory Bandwidth Monitoring), which is build on the CMT (Cache
Monitoring Technology) infrastructure, provides OS/VMM a way to
monitor bandwidth from one level of cache to another.

With current perf framework, this patch adds support to perf event
for MBM.

8b1f04693d admin: Introduce virAdmServerSetClientLimits
Opposite operation to virAdmServerGetClientLimits. Understandably though,
setting values for current number of clients connected or still waiting
for authentication does not make sense, since changes to these values are event
dependent, i.e. a client connects - counter is increased. Thus only the limits
to maximum clients connected and waiting for authentication can be set. Should
a request for other controls to be set arrive (provided such a setting will
be first introduced to the config), the set of configuration controls can be
later expanded (thanks to typed params). This patch also introduces a
constraint that the maximum number of clients waiting for authentication has to
be less than the overall maximum number of clients connected and any attempt to
violate this constraint will be denied.

through libvirtd.conf, however, it could be handy to not only know values for

connected and number of clients currently waiting for authentication which are
changing dynamically. This API does both, retrieves the limits as well as the

93ab4da5f4 admin: Introduce virAdmServerSetThreadPoolParameters
Since threadpool increments the current number of threads according to current
load, i.e. how many jobs are waiting in the queue. The count however, is
constrained by max and min limits of workers. The logic of this new API works
like this:
    1) setting the minimum
        a) When the limit is increased, depending on the current number of
threads, new threads are possibly spawned if the current number of
threads is less than the new minimum limit
        b) Decreasing the minimum limit has no possible effect on the current
           number of threads
    2) setting the maximum
        a) Icreasing the maximum limit has no immediate effect on the current
number of threads, it only allows the threadpool to spawn more
threads when new jobs, that would otherwise end up queued, arrive.
        b) Decreasing the maximum limit may affect the current number of
threads, if the current number of threads is less than the new
maximum limit. Since there may be some ongoing time-consuming jobs
that would effectively block this API from killing any threads.
Therefore, this API is asynchronous with best-effort execution,
i.e. the necessary number of workers will be terminated once they
finish their previous job, unless other workers had already
terminated, decreasing the limit to the requested value.
    3) setting priority workers
        - both increase and decrease in count of these workers have an
immediate impact on the current number of workers, new ones will be
spawned or some of them get terminated respectively.

ab517a5ccb makefile: Move include/Makefile.am to include/libvirt/Makefile.am
The reason for this is to fix the automatic rebuild of libvirt-common.h.in.
All *.in files should be automatically rebuilt each time they're modified.
It works well for makefiles and pkgconfig files, since they do have a valid
dependency in the top-level Makefile. However, with libvirt-common.h.in
there is no dependency in the top-level Makefile and there's no need for it
either, so this rule

include/libvirt/libvirt-common.h: $(top_builddir)/config.status \
        $(top_srcdir)/include/libvirt/libvirt-common.h.in
    cd $(top_builddir) && $(SHELL) ./config.status $@

is never hit and should be moved to include/Makefile, but that's automake's
job. According to GNU automake docs:

"Files created by AC_CONFIG_FILES, be they
Automake Makefiles or not, are all removed by ‘make distclean’. Their inputs
are automatically distributed, unless they are the output of prior
AC_CONFIG_FILES commands. Finally, rebuild rules are generated in the Automake
Makefile existing in the subdirectory of the output file, if there is one, or
in the top-level Makefile otherwise."

Which means that if we want to have the rule for libvirt-common.h automatically
generated by automake, the include/Makefile.am needs to be moved into libvirt/
subdirectory and $SUBDIRS in the top-level Makefile need to be adjusted as
well. This patch moves Makefile.am from include/ to include/libvirt, adjusting
the prefixes accordingly as well as updates the top-level Makefile $SUBDIRS to
properly hint automake to generate all rules at proper places.

Best way to see the changes, use -M with 'git show'.

1d35f6ffe1 polkit: Adjust message when authentication agent isn't found
When there isn't a ssh -X type session running and a user has not
been added to the libvirt group, attempts to run 'virsh -c qemu:///system'
commands from an otherwise unprivileged user will fail with rather
generic or opaque error message:

"error: authentication failed: no agent is available to authenticate"

This patch will adjust the error code and message to help reflect the
situation that the problem is the requested mechanism is UNAVAILABLE and
a slightly more descriptive error. The result on a failure then becomes:

"error: authentication unavailable: no polkit agent available to
            authenticate action 'org.libvirt.unix.manage'"

A bit more history on this - at one time a failure generated the
following type message when running the 'pkcheck' as a subprocess:

"error: authentication failed: polkit\56retains_authorization_after_challenge=1
Authorization requires authentication but no agent is available."

but, a patch was generated to adjust the error message to help provide
more details about what failed. This was pushed as commit id '96a108c99'.
That patch prepended a "polkit: " to the output. It really didn't solve
the problem, but gave a hint.

After some time it was deemed using DBus API calls directly was a
better way to go (since pkcheck calls them anyway). So, commit id
'1b854c76' (more or less) copied the code from remoteDispatchAuthPolkit
and adjusted it. Then commit id 'c7542573' adjusted the remote.c
code to call the new API (virPolkitCheckAuth). Finally, commit id
'308c0c5a' altered the code to call DBus APIs directly. In doing
so, it reverted the failing error message to the generic message
that would have been received from DBus anyway.

3245e1783c Revert "admin: Rename virAdmConnect to virAdmDaemon"
Commmit df8192aa introduced admin related rename and some minor
(caused by automated approach, aka sed) and some more severe isues along with
it. First reason to revert is the inconsistency with libvirt library.
Although we deal with the daemon directly rather than with a specific
hypervisor, we still do have a connection. That being said, contributors might
get under the impression that AdmDaemonNew would spawn/start a new daemon
(since it's admin API, why not...), or AdmDaemonClose would do the exact
opposite or they might expect DaemonIsAlive report overall status of the daemon
which definitely isn't the case.
The second reason to revert this patch is renaming virt-admin client. The
client tool does not necessarily have to reflect the names of the API's it's
using in his internals. An example would be 's/vshAdmConnect/vshAdmDaemon'
where noone can be certain of what the latter function really does. The former
is quite expressive about some connection magic it performs, but the latter does
not say anything, especially when vshAdmReconnect and vshAdmDisconnect were
left untouched.

aeb1078ab5 storage: Add flags to allow building pool during create processing
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=830056

Add flags handling to the virStoragePoolCreate and virStoragePoolCreateXML
API's which will allow the caller to provide the capability for the storage
pool create API's to also perform a pool build during creation rather than
requiring the additional buildPool step. This will allow transient pools
to be defined, built, and started.

The new flags are:

    * VIR_STORAGE_POOL_CREATE_WITH_BUILD
Perform buildPool without any flags passed.

    * VIR_STORAGE_POOL_CREATE_WITH_BUILD_OVERWRITE
      Perform buildPool using VIR_STORAGE_POOL_BUILD_OVERWRITE flag.

    * VIR_STORAGE_POOL_CREATE_WITH_BUILD_NO_OVERWRITE
      Perform buildPool using VIR_STORAGE_POOL_BUILD_NO_OVERWRITE flag.

It is up to the backend to handle the processing of build flags. The
overwrite and no-overwrite flags are mutually exclusive.

This patch is loosely based upon code originally authored by Osier
Yang that were not reviewed and pushed, see:

df8192aaf4 admin: Rename virAdmConnect to virAdmDaemon
virAdmConnect was named after virConnect, but after some discussions,
most of the APIs called will be working with remote daemon and starting
them virAdmDaemon will make more sense. Only possibly controversal name
is CloseCallback (de)registration, and connecting to the daemon (which
will still be Open/Close), but even this makes sense if one thinks about
the daemon being opened and closed, e.g. as file, etc.

This way all the APIs working with the daemon will start with
virAdmDaemon prefix, they will accept virAdmDaemonPtr as first parameter
and that will better suit with other namings as well (virDomain*,
virAdmServer*, etc.).

Because in virt-admin, the connection name does not refer to a struct
that would have a connect in its name, also adjust 'connname' in
clients. And because it is not used anywhere in the vsh code, move it
from there into each client.

Unfortunately, client side version retrieval API virGetVersion uses
one-time initialization (due to the fact we might not have initialized the

44c42b564d qemu: Don't report false error from MigrateFinish
virDomainMigrateFinish* APIs were unfortunately designed to return the
pointer to the domain on destination and NULL on error. This looks OK in
normal cases but the same API is also called when we know migration
failed and thus we expect Finish to return NULL even if it actually did
all it was supposed to do without any error. The call is defined to
return nonnull domain pointer over RPC, which means returning NULL will
always result in an error being send. If this was not in fact an error,
the API itself wouldn't set anything to the thread local virError, which
makes the RPC layer come up with it's own "Library function returned
error but did not set virError" error.

This is quite confusing and also hard to detect by the caller. This
patch adds a special error code which can be used to check that Finish
successfully aborted migration.

Just one of the simplest functions that returns string "Clients: X"
where X is the number of connected clients to daemon's first
subserver (the original one), so it can be tested using virsh, ipython,

The subserver is gathered by incrementing its reference
counter (similarly to getting qemu capabilities), so there is no
deadlock with admin subserver in this API.

Here you can see how functions should be named in the client (virAdm*)
and server (adm*).

There is also a parameter @flags that must be 0, which helps testing
proper error propagation into the client.

On the s/390x architecture, libvirt may already return 0 in the

We may also want to return this on aarch64 in future, because
